European Journal Highlights Fluid-Melt Transport and Mantle Water Preservation

The latest issue reports experimental work on lithium–boron transport in pegmatites, a newsletter on IMA nomenclature, and evidence for water retention in mantle xenoliths.

European Mineralogy’s most recent volume includes three notable papers. Christian Ronny Singer et al. report an experimental approach investigating element transport and isotope fractionation of lithium and boron in pegmatitic systems during fluid–melt interaction. Their setup simulates late‑stage pegmatite formation, showing that both elements are carried through a fluid phase but at low rates, and that ^7Li isotopes preferentially enrich the fluid 1.

The journal also publishes IMA Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC) Newsletter 92 written by Ferdinando Bosi, Frédéric Hatert, Marco Pasero, and Stuart J. Mills. It summarizes recent nomenclatural updates and classification guidelines for new minerals 1.

Finally, Konstantinos Thomaidis et al. present evidence for water concentration preservation in mantle xenoliths from Allègre and Ray Pic volcanoes in the French Massif Central. Using hydrous-point-defect pyroxenes as tracers, they show limited modification of deep hydrogen signatures during emplacement and eruption, supporting long‑term water retention in the lithospheric mantle 1.
