New Mineral Discoveries Reported in European Journal of Mineralogy
The latest issue of the European Journal of Mineralogy reports a newly identified silver‑tellurium sulfosalt, experimental insights on lithium and boron isotope behavior in pegmatites, and updates from IMA’s Commission on New Minerals.
The journal has announced the discovery of Fengruiite, a new Ag–Sb–Te sulfosalt mineral found at the Haopinggou Ag–Pb–Zn–Au deposit in eastern Qinling, China. The species is described as having the formula Ag₆Sb₂S₇ or alternatively Ag₉CuS₂Te₂, depending on the crystallographic analysis performed by Yongfei Tian, Guowu Li, Ningyue Sun, Min Liu, Jingwen Mao, Yunpeng Dong, Peng Liu, Wei Jian, Wei Yao, Xiuquan Wang, and Huishou Ye. The study appears in volume 38, pages 519–530 (2026) and can be accessed via 1]
This research shows that tellurium plays a key role in trapping and concentrating silver within high‑temperature mineral‑forming fluids, offering fresh clues to how silver‑rich deposits develop in ore bodies.2
A second article details an experimental approach designed to probe element transport and isotope fractionation of lithium and boron during fluid–melt interaction in pegmatitic systems. Christian Ronny Singer, Harald Behrens, Ingo Horn, Martin Oeser, Stefan Weyer, and François Holtz constructed a setup where two melt reservoirs were linked only through a fluid phase, simulating late‑stage pegmatite exsolution. Their results indicate that both Li and B are transported primarily via the fluid but at low rates; moreover, the heavier ⁷Li isotope is preferentially enriched in the fluid compared with the melts.2
The European Journal also published Newsletter 92 from the IMA Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification (CNMNC). Ferdinando Bosi, Frédéric Hatert, Marco Pasero, and Stuart J. Mills report updates on nomenclature standards and classification guidelines for newly identified minerals as part of the commission’s ongoing work. The newsletter appears in volume 38, pages 491–495 (2026) and can be found at 3]
