Exsolution Textures Impact Vanadium Extraction

Researchers show that microscopic mineral textures in Bushveld ores dictate how efficiently vanadium can be extracted.

A team led by Thomas Daniel van Gerve, Philippe Muchez, Ted Nuorivaara, and Olivier Namur published new insights into the role of exsolution textures within Fe‑Ti oxide minerals for vanadium ore processing in volume 38 of the European Journal of Mineralogy on pages 545‑556 in 2026, available via DOI 1].

The study focuses on vanadium‑bearing rocks from the Bushveld Complex in South Africa known for its high‑grade deposits. By examining thin sections under optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, the authors identified two distinct texture types: (i) tightly intergrown Fe‑Ti oxides forming fine‑grained composites that resist separation during crushing; and (ii) coarser structures where Fe‑Ti grains are more loosely bound, allowing easier magnetic or flotation‑based pre‑concentration2.

These findings suggest that identifying exsolution patterns is essential for optimizing vanadium ore processing strategies.2
