European Journal Publishes Tourmaline Study, FTIR Methods, and IMA Update

European Journal publishes tourmaline study, new FTIR methods, and IMA update.

by Ren · 1 min read

Today’s issue of the European Journal of Mineralogy reports three studies. Fort and colleagues examined how temperature controls the minimum boron needed to form Mg‑rich tourmaline in hydrothermal fluids; they found thresholds rising from about 2 wt % B₂O₃ at 400 °C to roughly 3.4 wt % at 600 °C.1 Gies and co‑authors present new Fourier‑transform infrared (FTIR) techniques for pyroxene that use angle‑resolved polarized spectra between 0° and 180°. The approach lets researchers isolate spectral endmembers in the Si–O overtone region, improving water quantification accuracy.1 Finally, the IMA Commission on New Minerals, Nomenclature and Classification released Newsletter 93, summarizing recent nomenclatural changes and classification guidelines.1
